ActiveWatch – the Media Monitoring Agency and Policy Center for Roma and Minorities sent today to Mircea Geoană, President of the Romanian Senate to the Permanent Bureau of the Senate and to the head of the parliamentary group of the Liberal Democrat Party a letter in which they highlighted the irresponsible and xenophobic character of Iulian Urban’s declarations, which the Senator published on his blog on the 25th of July 2011.

The Beyond Sports international organization announced earlier this week that Policy Center for Roma and Minorities was shortlisted for the Beyond Sport Awards 2011, at the “Best New Project” category, for its efforts to use sport as a social inclusion tool and for combating racism and discrimination.

From Oxford and Göteborg to Ferentari: experience exchange for active citizenship

British Council and Policy Center for Roma and Minorities organized in Bucharest, between 2-9 July, an international exchange programme that included representatives from several non-governmental organizations in Oxford (Great Britain) and Göteborg (Sweden). The meeting aimed to introduce the participants to the problems the Roma communities from Bucharest and its surroundings are facing and to offer a wide view upon the social inclusion practices developed in Romania for this minority, with an emphasis on educational projects. At the same time, the exchange wanted to identify collaboration opportunities between civil society organizations in Great Britain, Sweden and Romania.

High school students challenge discrimination

For nearly two weeks between 27 May and 8 June, 80 high school students in five cities – Timișoara, Iași, Buzău, Cluj-Napoca, Bucharest – have accepted the invitation of Policy Center for Roma and Minorities and its partners to participate in a series of educational debates that took the forefront of current social issues such as discrimination, racism and negative cultural stereotypes.

Hundreds of children and parents joined the International Children’s Day festivities

Over 400 children, parents and volunteers participated on Sunday at the International Children’s Day organized by Policy Center for Roma and Minorities in collaboration with the District 5 Mayoralty, on Livezilor Stret in Bucharest. The event was dedicated to the children in the Ferentari area and in particular to the pupils from the Elementary School no.136 where Policy Center for Roma and Minorities launched in October 2010 the Alternative Educational Club with the financial support of the Netherlands Embassy in Romania. Also, pupils from the Elementary School no.147 were involved in the event, as we plan to open a new club at this school.

International Children’s Day celebrated in Bucharest

Policy Center for Roma and Minorities and the District 5 Mayorality celebrates Sunday, May 29, between 10:00 and 12:00 am, on Livezilor St., the International Children’s Day. The event is dedicated to the children in the Ferentari area and in particular to the pupils at the Elementary School no.136 where Policy Center for Roma and Minorities launched in October the Alternative Educational Club with the financial support of the Netherlands Embassy in Romania. Also, pupils from the Elementary School no.147 will be involved in the event, as there are plans to open a new club at this school.
